AI Thread Summary
Having multiple supervisors for a PhD project is becoming increasingly common, with some projects featuring two or three supervisors. It's important to understand the roles of these supervisors, as they can vary significantly. Some may serve as official supervisors who provide minimal interaction, while others may be involved in specific aspects of the research or offer regular guidance throughout the process. The dynamics of supervision can include a mix of formal and informal roles, which can impact the overall PhD experience. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for prospective PhD candidates when evaluating their options.

Hi,
I'm just applying to PhDs at the moment and some projects have two or even three supervisors!
What do you guys think about this? I thought it was normal to have only one!

Thanks

I don't have UK-specific experience, but first you have to see if those additional supervisors are just official supervisors (=they discuss your progress once or twice a year and read your final thesis), supervisors for different parts of the thesis (=you work a while with SV1 and a while with SV2), actual supervisors you'll talk to frequently the whole time. The last two categories can be inofficial supervisors as well. And those "supervisor types" can be mixed in arbitrary ways.

I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
Hi everyone! I'm a senior majoring in physics, math, and music, and I'm currently in the process applying for theoretical and computational biophysics (primarily thru physics departments) Ph.D. programs. I have a 4.0 from a basically unknown school in the American South, two REUs (T50 and T25) in computational biophysics and two semesters of research in optics (one purely experimental, one comp/exp) at my home institution (since there aren't any biophysics profs at my school), but no...
