The discussion revolves around a photo contest themed "Iconic," where participants share and submit photographs that represent well-known locations or symbols. The conversation includes contest rules, various entries, and commentary on the nature of iconic representations in photography.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Participants discuss the definition of "iconic" and provide examples such as the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Some entries include photographs of locations like the Arizona Monument at Pearl Harbor, St. Basil's in Moscow, and El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.
  • One participant humorously suggests that "space" could be an iconic location, which is challenged by others regarding contest rules.
  • There are multiple entries depicting San Francisco, with discussions about the Powell Street cable car and its historical context.
  • Participants express opinions on the originality of their entries, with some feeling that certain iconic representations, like the Golden Gate Bridge, are clichés.
  • There is a playful exchange about the nature of replicas and imitations, particularly regarding locations like Malmö and Solvang.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on what constitutes an iconic representation, as some entries are debated for their suitability. There are differing opinions on the originality of certain iconic symbols, and the discussion remains unresolved regarding the appropriateness of some submissions.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the rules, particularly regarding the number of submissions and the qualifications of certain photographs. The discussion reflects a mix of humor and serious consideration of what makes a location iconic.

Malmo? Solvang? Must be imitations.

Copies, naturally; from the Hans Christian Andersen folk tale. The city of Solvang is modeled as a small Danish village; the Little Mermaid replica intended as homage to the Old World, with excellent coffee and tasty pastries. Nearby Buellton features "Andersen's Famous Pea Soup Restaurant".

Also intended as humor. Wiki lists 13 replicas but I imagine more exist. I seem to remember a similar bronze statue at Stanford University sculpture garden among the Rodin's.

I never said what it was - I thought I might withdraw from the contest if anyone asked!
I did not know about the copies nor the vandalisms, nor even that it is itself a copy till you informed me today.
She is certainly photogenic - all the descriptions concur with my impression of the moment, using words like 'unimposing'! But certainly iconic.

Please do not withdraw your little mermaid. The humor, history of vandalism, indeed the many copies, proves that the Copenhagen statue remains an international icon. She is beautiful.

My parents could not afford to send us to Europe for vacations but we visited Solvang every trip between Northern and Southern California and enjoyed the folklore associated with the local copy. Likewise, tourists who may never visit France enjoy the ambiance of the Paris Hotel and the replica Eiffel Tower on the Strip. Thanks.
