SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the evolutionary relationship between Plantae protists and diatoms, specifically whether their similarities stem from convergent or divergent evolution. Participants assert that these groups are paraphyletic on the evolutionary tree of life, suggesting that their similarities arise from convergent evolution due to adaptations to environmental conditions rather than shared derived traits from a common ancestor. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding these evolutionary mechanisms in the context of speciation and environmental influences.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of evolutionary biology concepts, particularly paraphyly
  • Familiarity with convergent and divergent evolution
  • Knowledge of environmental adaptation mechanisms in organisms
  • Basic grasp of phylogenetic trees and speciation processes
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the concept of paraphyly in evolutionary biology
  • Study examples of convergent evolution in various taxa
  • Explore the role of environmental factors in evolutionary adaptations
  • Learn about phylogenetic analysis methods and their applications
USEFUL FOR

Students and researchers in evolutionary biology, ecologists studying adaptation, and anyone interested in the evolutionary relationships among protists and diatoms.

Do similarities between plantae protist and diatoms arise from convergent or divergent evolution?

The Attempt at a Solution

I think they are from convergent evolution however I can't think of a reason why, I know they are paraphyltic on the evolution tree of life. It could be that environmental conditions could have caused this change thus it's convergent, they don't have shared derived trait with a common ancestor, and these new traits that have acquired are mere adaptations to environmental conditions. (this is my best attempt, any help is appreciated !)

Hello!
I think divergent is to do with with differences, and ultimately speciation, not with similarities.
I may have misunderstood what your saying, but I hope this is of some help.
