Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the measurement of entangled photons, specifically regarding the notation and understanding of the +/- basis in relation to the 45/135 polarization basis. The context includes references to experimental setups and literature on quantum entanglement.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire whether measuring in the +/- basis corresponds to the 45/135 basis for entangled photons.
  • Others express uncertainty about the notation of 45/135 being associated with +/- and seek clarification on its common terminology.
  • A participant references the delayed choice entanglement swapping experiment from 2012 and mentions the notation used for polarization in that context.
  • One participant later confirms that the +/- basis does indeed denote the |45> and |135> basis, citing a specific source for this information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion includes some uncertainty regarding the notation and terminology, but a later reply confirms the relationship between the bases. However, initial confusion remains among participants about the notation.

Contextual Notes

There are references to specific literature and experimental setups, but the discussion does not resolve all uncertainties regarding the notation and its common usage.

I have a quick, general, query.

When conducting an experiment with entangled photons, measuring in the +/- basis would mean in the 45/135 basis?

I don't think I've seen that notation before (45/135 associated with +/-).

Same. I am just wondering what the basis is also known as. I'm referring to the delayed choice entanglement swapping experiment from 2012. They denote polarization, when a bell-state measurement occurred, as |+> and |->

Found the answer: it is indeed denoting the |45> and |135> basis. Thank you, 'The Quantum Divide' by Chris Gerry, pg. 111.
