Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding an easier problem book for General Relativity (GR) that is more accessible than the "Problem Book In Relativity and Gravitation" by Alan P. Lightman, et al. Participants share their experiences with existing texts and suggest alternatives that may be less challenging.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses difficulty with the Lightman book, noting vague texts and the challenge of solving only about half of the problems.
  • Another participant humorously suggests that the original poster's hair is more important than the exercises, while recommending a book by Ta-Pei Cheng on cosmology and GR that includes solutions to some exercises.
  • A later reply clarifies the author's name as Ta-Pei Cheng.
  • Another participant mentions a GR text that integrates problems throughout each chapter, describing it as a middle ground between a math-heavy approach and a physics-first approach.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a single recommended book, and multiple suggestions are presented, indicating a variety of opinions on suitable alternatives for problem books in GR.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty regarding the exact authors of the suggested books, and there is a lack of clarity on the specific content and difficulty level of the recommended texts.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers looking for accessible problem books in General Relativity, particularly those who have struggled with existing texts and are seeking alternatives with varying levels of difficulty.

Hello,. I am looking for another problem book for GR. I have used Problem Book In Relativity and Gravitation by Alan P. Lightman, et al.

But first the copy I get is not in a good quality. Some texts are vague. Also, it seems too difficult for me. I only can solve about half of the problems in every chapter. Oh, my poor hair. Compared to them, problems in QFT are so delightful.

Therefore, I am looking for another problem book publichsed recently and not too difficult.

Thanks!

Dont take it too serious... Your hair is more important than any exercise 🤪 there's a book by tai peng on cosmology and GR with solutions to some of its exercises in it. Also the book by schutz has students' solution manual.

Thanks! But I could not google the book by tai peng. I am not sure whether you mean Tai-Peng Tsai or others?

Ta-Pei Cheng.
All the best!
