Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around troubleshooting an error encountered while using NDSolve in Mathematica to solve a large system of coupled differential equations. Participants explore potential causes of the error and methods for identifying issues within the equations.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster reports an error message from NDSolve and seeks assistance in identifying the problem.
  • One participant suggests checking for potential typographical errors in variable names, specifically mentioning "ro24" and "ro44" versus "rod24" and "rod44".
  • The original poster expresses appreciation for the suggestion and inquires about how the participant identified the issue among many equations.
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of developing skills to troubleshoot Mathematica behavior and encourages the original poster to learn methods for self-diagnosis in future problems.
  • A link to an external resource is provided as a method for listing user-defined variables and functions in a Mathematica notebook.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the specific cause of the error, but there is agreement on the importance of troubleshooting skills and methods for identifying issues in complex equations.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights the challenges of managing large systems of equations in Mathematica and the potential for typographical errors to cause significant issues. There is an emphasis on the need for effective problem-solving strategies in computational environments.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for Mathematica users, particularly those working with complex systems of equations, as well as individuals interested in troubleshooting computational errors and improving their problem-solving skills in programming environments.

i want to solve a large system of coupled differential equations but i get this error

NDSolve::nlnum:

i attach the notebook in zip format.

what is the problem?

thanks

Search your notebook for
ro24 and ro44
and see if you really meant
rod24 and rod44

Just a guess

thanks
that was amazing!
how you guess that?

Actually I did not just guess that. If I had guessed that it would have been amazing. Now you have to think about how I was able to find those two in the 400+ equations that you have there. And how you might more likely avoid problems similar to this in the future.

i can not understand how did you do that.
please tell me how?

is one method to do this particular task.

Developing the ability to find explanations for puzzling Mathematica behavior is extremely important for every Mathematica user. I really suggest that you try to figure out how you could have found this yourself. Then see if you can generalize that method to help you be able to find the answer to the next question you find.
