Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the practical applications of quantum field theory (QFT) beyond particle physics, exploring whether QFT has been utilized in the design of various technologies or fields.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about practical applications of QFT outside of particle physics.
  • Another participant mentions that QFT is utilized in solid state physics for a wide range of applications.
  • A third participant suggests that since QFT can describe almost all of physics (excluding gravity), any application of physics, including chemistry, engineering, and increasingly biology, could be considered an application of QFT.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the scope of QFT applications, with some suggesting specific fields like solid state physics, while others propose a broader interpretation that encompasses many areas of science and engineering. No consensus is reached on the extent of QFT's applications.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify specific examples of applications or the nature of the designs mentioned, leaving some assumptions about the definitions of "application" and "design" unresolved.

TL;DR
Are there practical applications of qft?
Hello,

I have a simple question : are there, today, practical applications of qft (elsewhere than in particle physics) ?
By applications, I mean, did we design stuff with the help of this theory ?

Thanks !

Great, thanks !

Since almost all of physics is describable by QFT (anything except gravity) anything that you consider as "application of physics" (which is in my opinion all chemistry and engineering and also more and more parts of biology) an "application of QFT".
