SUMMARY

Archimedes resolved the problem of determining the purity of a crown by using the principle of buoyancy, specifically through water displacement. He submerged the crown in water to measure the volume displaced, which allowed him to calculate its density and ascertain whether it was made of pure gold. This method is foundational in fluid mechanics and demonstrates the practical application of Archimedes' principle in real-world scenarios.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Archimedes' principle
  • Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with density and buoyancy concepts
  • Ability to perform water displacement experiments
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the applications of Archimedes' principle in modern physics
  • Explore fluid mechanics textbooks for in-depth explanations
  • Study density calculations and their relevance in material science
  • Investigate historical experiments related to Archimedes and their impact on science
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching fluid mechanics, and anyone interested in the historical applications of scientific principles.

Question About Archimedes ? HELP!

How Did Archimedes Resolve the problem of the Crown ?

Physics news on Phys.org
oh, I saw a documentary on that. I think he dipped the crown in water, and found out depending on the water level, the density of the gold? This is related to your other post isn't it, the oil water question? What is it with all these fluid problems?

Thanks for your help!
I "googled the topic and found what i was looking for!

No it's not related to the other problem, but it is in the same
chapter.

I couldn't resolve the oil/water problem i really needed it so i could have
40 points in my class which could help me get a C or B..
But what can i do!
