I grew up with a group of friends that was heavy on rap, so rap is by far my favorite music genre (the influence is innevitable). Nearly 2/3 of my Ipod consist of rap songs, as a matter of fact. I mostly dislike modern rappers, though. Some of my favorite songs:

Maybe that video killed them. I never heard that one before, and don't care much for it. Though, the lyrics are fun...I could envision them being reworked in the style of Will Smith's "Get Jiggy Wit' It" and being much better.

Is K-Os rap? I like K-Os. I also like Lupe Fiasco, Common, Immortal Technique, and Fort Minor. That's about as much rap as I listen to though. I used to listen to a lot of rap, but I fell out like three years ago because I got tired of all the mainstream stuff. I now mostly listen to music without words, trance and psytrance.

That's all the crap I don't like. For some of them, you can barely even understand the lyrics, their diction is so bad.

I like Will Smith. Even if you don't care for the genre of music, you have to have respect for a guy who really kept his music clean in a time when everyone was getting more and more explicit with their lyrics for shock value. I really think he's a great role model too...partly because the reason he kept his lyrics clean was because of his grandmother's influence. I saw an interview with him once where he talked about that. He had been writing down some lyrics in a journal that were full of cuss words, and opened it up to write more one day to find a note from his grandmother telling him something along the lines that he was such a smart young man, surely he could find better words to express himself than those vulgar ones. He was partly embarrassed his grandmother saw what he had been writing and partly encouraged by her words about his intelligence, and was inspired by that to keep his lyrics clean for her (and you could tell by the way he talked about her in the interview that he really loved his grandma).

K-Os is genre transcendent - really talented artist by the way.

 I expected that reaction. Different tastes; I'm sure there's tons of stuff you like that I would consider utter crap.

I'm eclectic and yes I listen to rap.

Personally I used to like stuff from Lil Wayne (back then like in the Carter I and II and some stuff with Birdman), but the content is pretty weak compared to before.

Even though I still listened to diff types of music back then (particularly since I love playing many different instruments so I had an ear for a lot of different music), I liked rap more in the 90s. I liked the stuff that Tupac and Notorious BIG talked about.

The transition from rap in the 90s to today is apparent. The content is totally different, and it's just not the same. I do like some stuff from Lupe Fiasco, Common, and other intellectual rappers, but I got tired of the same drawn out stuff from past-favs like Lil Wayne. I never really became of the hyphy movement material here in the Bay Area either, so that rules out all that Bay Area music. The beats are catchy, but the lyrics are garbage.

This is mainly why I like to concentrate on classical rock. There's a lot of interesting stuff being said in classical rock and the supporting music is not bad at all (like stuff by Pink Floyd or even Led Zeppelin at times).

I also liked a lot of stuff by Mos Def, T.K. and pretty much a lot of Blackstar's stuff.

Blackstar feat. Common- Respiration

That song is awesome.

I like the first one, and Presidents is actually one of my favorite song by Jay-Z.

Oh, and you can't call Dr. Dre and Biggie Smalls cliche, they're originators.

Scream scream scream, mumble mumble mumble. Do they even HAVE lyrics?

And, yes, werg, I'm sure I like stuff you wouldn't. My tastes run rather eclectic, so there's something for everyone to dislike in my collection (one friend doesn't like my Jimmy Buffett albums, another thinks I'm crazy for liking country music). I had a party where I just left my iTunes library on shuffle, and someone commented that it's rather uncommon that someone would have both Village People and Ozzy Osbourne playing back to back.

Just like Cyrus said, there is a lot of bad rap out there just like all the horrible rock that is on the radio. You have to dig to find good rap artists. There is a lot of awesome rap out there that has 0 cussing and that doesn't talk about treating women like objects.

Good rap:

Jurassic 5 "Quality Control"-

The Roots "The Next Movement"-

And yes, The Roots play all of their instruments.

OH AND YOU CAN'T FORGET A TRIBE CALLED QUEST

One of the best rap/hip hop groups EVER.

Oddly enough, yes, they do. I mean, when I listen to it (I love Death Metal, by the way), it doesn't really matter what he's saying, all that matters is that he's pissed, but here are the lyrics to the first and second songs, respectively:

Rap, pop, and death/hard core/black metal are great for parties, but I would never listen to them on my personal time for enjoyment. to me they're just like great background noise that get you pumped up, but not really a musical experience that evokes any emotion in me.

except for beastie boys, haha. they're my guilty rap pleasure. old schoool

Sounds like dance music, I'm a founder member of the keep dance/trance/triphop/etc to the dance floors movement.

Some musical forms are the musak of the music industry. teen pop, dance and so on are probably at least in my opinion those categories I have very little respect for musically.

I listen to rap and country----but only the Musak versions.

Triphop? Is that what the people with two left feet are supposed to dance to?

I can certainly appreciate that you want something different to dance/work out to than you would choose to sit back and enjoy while relaxing in the living room, or when trying to study.

Indeed, not only that but I don't think people who write dance music except for a few notable exceptions try very hard, because it all sounds derivative, or it is actually someone elses song remixed with a drum machine in the back ground. Nothing against that on a dance floor but it's still not great music whichever way you want to look at it. At least rap has a message even if you think it is rubbish, and for the record I really am not interested in how much hos, bling and guns you have. But then not every rap artist writes poppy trash. Back in the day I was actually a bit of a fan of Ice-T.

It takes a while to get used to. You'll notice all the nuances and realize that there is a method to the madness. That is, if you want to. If you don't like it, then you don't like it. I mean, for me, it's really relaxing and I listen to it on my own all the time.

Are you serious. He was a one hit wonder, and it stunk the first time.

I think the reason why he was a one hit wonder was because he got pissed off at Weird Al's parody of his song , Amish Paradise, which probably made him unpopular because he was so uptight about it . It is ironic that coolio got mad at Al for parodying his song because coolio sampled Stevie wonder's song pasttime paradise.

IMO,Weird al's Amish Paradise is far superior to coolio's gangsta's paradise

I used to like rap a lot (dre, snoop dogg, tupac, ice cube et al), but ever since I switched to rock, I can't stand most of the stuff I used to go crazy over. I still like eminem though.

Not me. :) Listening to Classical 2008 right now.

I listen to "Golden Age Hip Hop" - mostly stuff from the late 80s and early 90s. However, I also enjoy some of the mid 90s gangster rap (Nas, Dr. Dre, 2pac, etc.)

Here are some of my favorites from the "Golden Age":

Eric B and Rakim - Microphone Fiend
Big Daddy Kane - Ain't No Half Steppin'
Boogie Down Productions (BDP) - My Philosophy
A Tribe Called Quest - Jazz (We've Got) and Buggin' Out
Gang Starr - Ex Girl to Next Girl
Stetsasonic - Talkin' all that Jazz
Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth - T.R.O.Y - They Reminisce Over You

Here is some real old stuff - LL Cool J, 1985, Radio

Some more late 80s/early 90s: De La Soul, Jungle Brothers (these groups are very similar in style to A Tribe Called Quest), Ultramagnetic MCs, Main Source, Brand Nubian, EPMD.I think Cyrus and some others already listed some of the classics from the mid 90s: Nas - Illmatic, Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt, Mobb Deep - The Infamous, 2pac - Me Against the World, Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die. Don't forget about early gangster rap: Ice T, NWA, Kool G Rap and DJ Polo. There are a lot of great hip hop albums from 1986 - 1996: almost all of the "5 mic" albums from The Source are classics and a good place to start.edit...

MIH - I like your style - Digital Underground and classic LL Cool J

GNW - The Roots, Jurassic 5 - Good stuff!

lmao, I guess I should change my signature given that the Giants won the Superbowl
