Reaction force on a book resting on top of a table.

SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the reaction forces acting on a book resting on a table, specifically analyzing Newton's third law of motion. The downward force of gravity and the upward normal force do not constitute a third law pair; rather, the reaction to the gravitational force is the force exerted by the book on the table, directed upward. This interaction is effectively illustrated in a free body diagram, demonstrating the forces at play.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Newton's laws of motion
  • Familiarity with free body diagrams
  • Basic knowledge of gravitational force
  • Concept of normal force in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the applications of Newton's third law in various physical scenarios
  • Learn how to construct and interpret free body diagrams
  • Explore the concept of gravitational force in different contexts
  • Investigate the relationship between normal force and surface interactions
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding fundamental forces and their interactions in static systems.

Question:

A book is resting on top of a table.

1. Do the downward force of gravity and the upward force of normal force constitute a 3rd law pair? (Yes/No)

2. The reaction to the force of gravity is exerted on the (earth/table/book) by the (earth/table/book). Its direction is (upward/downward).

According to Newton's third law, I know that reaction force occurs when object A receiving an impact from object B exerts a force equal in magnitute but opposite in direction to object B.
But how do you show this on free body diagram?

Thank you.
