Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding online resources for self-learning mathematics, specifically algebra and trigonometry, in preparation for calculus. Participants share their experiences with different platforms and seek recommendations for websites that provide practice problems and instructional materials.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Homework-related
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant found MyMathLab extremely helpful for learning algebra due to its unlimited practice problems and instructional videos, but noted that access is restricted to registered courses.
  • The same participant is looking for similar websites that offer practice problems for trigonometry, expressing a preference for online resources over textbooks.
  • Another participant recommends Khan Academy and NPTEL as potential resources for learning math.
  • A different participant suggests Patrick's videos and a specific site called "Trig without Tears" for trigonometry, but mentions a lack of knowledge regarding websites that provide challenging problems.
  • There is a discussion about the appropriateness of posting in the "Learning Materials" forum, with some participants unsure about posting permissions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the usefulness of online resources for learning math, but there is no consensus on a specific website that meets all the criteria mentioned. Multiple suggestions are offered, but no single recommendation is universally accepted.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about posting permissions in specific forum sections, which may limit the sharing of additional resources.

Recommend Website for Learning Math on my Own??

When learning algebra, my instructor used an online program/website called pearson/my mathLab to assign homework. i found this to be EXTREMEMLY helpful in learning how to do the work, as it provided unlimited practice problems with solutions, and even videos on how to solve the trickier ones.

I am now studying trigonometry on my own this summer to better prepare me for calculus. Unfortunately, MyMathLab does not allow access to their site unless you are registered in a course. I am looking for a website that provides problems in such a manner. I know I can always use textbooks, however I found using a site like this to be so much simpler and easier, and most importantly, it helped to motivate me to move on to the next level/complete all the problems in one sitting. I get restless and bored with textbooks for some reason.

In any case, if anyone knows of such a site I would very much appreciate a recommendation. I don't care if you have to pay a fee to use it. It would be worth every penny!

thanks!

Khan Academy, NPTEL.

And shouldn't this be in the "Math and Science Learning Materials" Section instead?

oops... sorry about that!

I don't think normal members have the permission to post on 'Learning Materials' forum. But do check it out, there are quite a lot good resources in there.

In addition to dimension10's recommendation of Khan Academy, you can try out Patrick's video's on math. Another place to do trigonometry exclusively is Trig without Tears : http://oakroadsystems.com/twt/

I do not specifically know of a website that will give you good challenging problems, though. I tend to do it from various books :-p

Oh, didn't know that. Haven't gone there before!
