ResearchGate, founded in 2010 with origins in Berlin and Cambridge, has developed a semantic search engine that enhances research paper discovery by analyzing entire abstracts rather than just keywords. This approach aims to yield more precise search results by utilizing a broader range of terms. Users are curious about the effectiveness of the search engine and whether it lives up to its claims. There are inquiries about joining the platform, with some expressing hesitance due to eligibility concerns and past experiences with similar sites. A desire for firsthand accounts regarding the site's functionality and professionalism is evident, as some users prefer established platforms like IEEE. Overall, the discussion highlights a mix of skepticism and curiosity about ResearchGate's value for researchers.

Here is their http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ResearchGate" , note the section I highlighted below:
http://www.researchgate.net/" has developed a semantic search engine that browses internal resources and major external research databases, including PubMed, CiteSeer, arXiv, NASA Library and others to find research papers. The search engine was developed to analyze a larger string of terms than is used in standard keyword searches – it will analyze entire abstracts – with the idea that more terms will allow more precise results.
It appears this http://www.researchgate.net/" is young (2010) has roots in Berlin, Germany and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Is anyone here using it ? If so is the search engine everything they claim it is ?

Can I just call myself a scientist and join the site?

I am not going to using it yet, not eligible as of now.

I was hoping someone would be "fresh meat" and fill us in on the good, the bad of this site. I tend to shy away from these places. I haven't been able to get my LinkedIn account removed yet either. Need to contact those folks directly I guess. I would say try to sign up root and let us know if it is intrusive, or really worthwhile, delivering the goods so to speak as advertised.

I am no good here. But personally so far I could sense any professionalism coming out of that site.

I only use http://www.ieee.org/index.html" .
