RIP Basil Hiley (1935–2025)

AI Thread Summary
Basil Hiley, a prominent figure in the field of Bohmian mechanics and a close associate of David Bohm, recently passed away. He was set to host an event on Bohm's work next month, highlighting his significant contributions to quantum mechanics. The discussion also references a BBC program featuring Hiley and Roger Penrose, which delves into interpretations of quantum mechanics. Additionally, there is a brief, unrelated exchange about the size of a ruler in a photo, with speculation that it may come from a prop department.

I was just skimming some reading on Bohmian mechanics and for some reason decided to check on Basil Hiley. He was co-author and close friend of Bohm. I just noticed he died a couple of weeks ago. He was supposed to hosting some event on Bohm's next month. Quite champion of the field. Hopefully some other users might explore the importance of his work. I remember hearing from him first in BBC In Our Time discussing interpretations on quantum mechanics with Penrose, here it is:

What?

Edit: I do not know how I did not notice such a ruler in the photo.

Probably in a prop department.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
