AI Thread Summary
Bill Moyers, a prominent journalist, commentator, political analyst, and ordained Baptist minister, passed away on June 16, with his death largely going unnoticed. He played a significant role in securing funding for the Peace Corps and was instrumental in founding PBS, serving as a special assistant and press secretary to President Johnson. Moyers is best remembered for his impactful PBS programs over four decades, where he explored the underlying causes of current events, earning a reputation for honesty and credibility in journalism. In light of his passing, there is a call for individuals, particularly older Americans, to consider donating from their tax-deferred retirement accounts to nonprofit charities, such as public broadcasting, as a way to honor his legacy. Donations made through IRA providers do not count as taxable income and can fulfill Required Minimum Distribution requirements, allowing for significant contributions without tax implications.

Bill Moyers, journalist, commentator, political analyst and ordained Baptist minister, passed away on June,16. I was surprised his passing was unnoticed.

He was instrumental in getting the funding for the Peace Corps and in the founding of PBS. He was special assistant and press secretary to President Johnson. Although he worked as a correspondent and analyst for CBS and NBC he is best noted for his programs on PBS for over 4 decades.

I enjoyed many of his shows becasue he delved into the underlying causes or influences of current situations.

And he was, over times when at least some journalists (many when he started out, fewer over time) were honest and believable, he was one of the best.

R.I.P.

I remind all the geriatric members in the US how easy it is too divert distributions from a tax deferred retirement account to nonprofit charities. They get untaxed amount and you get the full RMD value/ even if you don't itemize deductons. Give a pre-tax chunk to public broadcasting before it is too late. Talk to your IRA provider for details. Extra bang for the bucks. Do it for Moyers

Let me clarify this: The amount that you donate (in a "hands off" manner by your IRA provider) is not reported as nor does it count as taxable income to you. It idoes, however, add to and count as part of your Required Minimum Distribution (if you are >73.5 during this year). You can gift up to 108k$ Dig deep for Bill Moyers and all of us. Easy Peasey

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
