Role of Lithium in Alkyne and C2H5NH2 Reaction?

SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the role of lithium in the reaction between an alkyne and ethylamine (C2H5NH2) in the presence of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). Lithium acts as a catalyst, facilitating the deprotonation of ethylamine and the release of chloride from NH4Cl, leading to a two-step reaction. The first step involves lithium interacting with ethylamine, producing reactive intermediates that can subsequently react with the alkyne across its triple bond. Ammonium chloride is utilized to quench the reaction and assist in product workup.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of alkyne chemistry

Hi,
I have here an alkyne reacting with C2H5NH2 in the presence of lithium and NH4Cl.

Does the lithium catalyse the split of a proton from C2H5NH2 and also a Cl from the NH4Cl which then react with the alkyne across the triple bond?

It looks like a two step reaction. First step is lithium + ethylamine in the presence of your alkyne. Can you determine the reaction products between lithium metal and ethylamine? Can one or more of those products react with the alkyne?

Ammonium chloride is used to quench the reaction and work up the product.
