SUMMARY

The discussion centers on equations 3 and 4 from chapter 1 of "Baby Rudin," a well-known analysis textbook by Walter Rudin. Participants express confusion regarding the origins of these equations, with one user noting that their professor suggested they were derived by a highly intelligent individual, possibly Rudin himself. The conversation highlights the need for clarity on which specific text is being referenced, as many users lack access to the relevant materials. Posting the equations for further analysis is recommended for better understanding.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with mathematical analysis concepts
  • Understanding of Walter Rudin's "Baby Rudin" textbook
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical notation and terminology
  • Access to academic resources for further reading
NEXT STEPS
  • Review Walter Rudin's "Baby Rudin" for context on equations 3 and 4
  • Research the historical context of mathematical analysis to understand Rudin's contributions
  • Explore online forums or academic resources for discussions on specific equations in Rudin's texts
  • Engage with study groups or academic peers to discuss and analyze the equations in question
USEFUL FOR

Students of mathematical analysis, educators teaching Rudin's texts, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of foundational concepts in analysis.

Hello everybody. I started readin baby rudin a few days ago. And i came across equations 3 and 4 on page 2 of chapter 1. They seem a bit mysterious to me, does anybody know where did they come from?

Thanks in advance for your help

I asked my professor that same question. They pretty much said that someone really clever (maybe Rudin? I don't know) came up with it.

First, Rudin wrote many texts, notably the analysis texts called, simply "Rudin" and "baby Rudin" but others as well. We don't know which texts you are talking about. Second, even if you told us what text you mean, many of us do not have available to consult. Perhaps if you posted the equations in question?
