Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenge of obtaining the NACA airfoil specifications for the 1A170E-JHA7660 propeller, which is used on the Cessna 172S Skyhawk. Participants are exploring resources and methods to model the propeller in Solidworks for an undergraduate design project.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is seeking resources or answers on how to derive a NACA airfoil from the 1A170E-JHA7660 propeller for modeling purposes.
  • Another participant suggests contacting McCauley, the manufacturer of the propeller, for information.
  • A further suggestion is made to check if there are Cessna 172S aircraft at local community airports to potentially measure the propeller directly with permission.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on the best method to obtain the airfoil information, with multiple suggestions being offered without clear agreement on a single approach.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the feasibility or accuracy of the suggested methods for obtaining the airfoil data, nor does it address any specific limitations of the resources mentioned.

Hey everyone, I am looking for either a resource or an answer to my question. Does anyone know of a way to gleam a NACA airfoil off of a 1A170E-JHA7660 propeller? I am trying to make a model of the prop in Solidworks for my Design Project. I know the 1A170 family of props is old as dirt and I know that the application (Cessna 172S Skyhawk) is literally the Toyota Camry of the skies; shockingly no one has studied much of anything on the specific airfoil used in the prop.

Hmmmm. Sounds like a good question for McCauley, the folks who actually make the propeller.

Are there any of those aircraft at your local community airport? If so, you could probably ask permission from the airport and the plane owner to make measurements on the prop.
