SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the suitability of pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, particularly for individuals with varying math skills. The consensus is that mechanical engineering is a practical field, involving hands-on work with materials like metals, alongside theoretical knowledge. While some mathematical concepts may not be directly applied in the profession, they provide valuable exposure. Continuous improvement in math skills is emphasized as essential for success in this discipline.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks for design tasks
  • Fundamental math skills, particularly in calculus and algebra
  • Knowledge of materials science, especially metals
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the curriculum of mechanical engineering programs to understand practical applications
  • Practice advanced math techniques relevant to engineering, such as calculus and linear algebra
  • Explore SolidWorks tutorials to enhance design skills
  • Investigate internships or hands-on projects in mechanical engineering to gain practical experience
USEFUL FOR

Prospective mechanical engineering students, educators in engineering disciplines, and individuals interested in the practical applications of engineering principles.

Hello I have recently applied for college and I put down mechanical engineering as my number 1. I ament that good at maths in fact I struggle with it, but I am very good at solid works and I love working with metals. I still don't know if mechanical engineering is mainly designing or if there is any practical side to it because I would rather the practical side! Could anyone help?

I think you will enjoy Mech Engineering. It is very practical although some of things you learn may never be used in your profession but still you will have had exposure to them and that is a good thing.

Keep working on your math it's definitely an important aspect to being good at Mech Engineering.
