Should I take geometry or graph theory for elective?

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the decision of whether to take a geometry course (specifically Euclidean) or a graph theory course as an elective, with considerations of course difficulty and personal interest in mathematics.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire for an easy course to boost their GPA, mentioning that the geometry course is Euclidean and not topological.
  • Another participant critiques the motivation of choosing a course solely for GPA improvement, suggesting it is not a valid reason.
  • A different participant clarifies that while GPA is a consideration, their primary interest lies in mathematics, and they prefer a course that is less rigorous in terms of proofs.
  • One participant notes that both courses can be approached with varying levels of rigor and recommends consulting the professor for guidance.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the appropriateness of choosing a course based solely on ease for GPA improvement, and there are differing opinions on the rigor of the courses.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the definitions of "easy" and "rigorous," as well as the specific content and teaching style of the courses in question.

I just want something easy to boost my gpa and these are my two options. The geometry course is euclidean not topological.

Thanks

Probably the worst reason to take a course...

Its did not say that was the entire reason of why I would take either of these courses. I really love math that's why I choose them over other science electives. What I meant was that I would prefer a course which is less rigorous proof wise.

It's really impossible to tell what course to take. Both Euclidean geometry and graph theory can be done very rigorously, or less rigorously. Best to ask the professor who teaches the course.
