Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the selection of an advanced elective course for a chemistry major, specifically focusing on the availability of inorganic chemistry 2 and the participant's concerns about taking advanced organic chemistry due to previous difficulties in the subject. The conversation touches on course offerings, personal strengths and weaknesses, and the impact of prerequisite courses.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a preference for inorganic chemistry 2 over advanced organic chemistry, citing a lack of confidence in organic chemistry despite a desire to improve.
  • Another participant suggests consulting professors to clarify which courses will be offered, indicating that this could inform the decision-making process.
  • A participant inquires about the size and characteristics of the department, which may influence course availability and faculty engagement.
  • One participant mentions a plan to complete the physical chemistry sequence before taking any advanced electives, noting that most electives require this prerequisite.
  • There is a suggestion for self-studying organic chemistry during the summer to bolster understanding before potentially taking the course.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on course selection and preparation strategies, with no consensus on which elective to take or the best approach to address the participant's concerns about organic chemistry.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not established a clear understanding of course offerings for the upcoming semester, and there are unresolved questions regarding the prerequisites for advanced electives.

Who May Find This Useful

As a chemistry major I have to take one advance elective. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to tell which courses will be offered in that semester. I’m hoping inorganic chemistry 2 is offered. Because the last couple of semesters it seems advance organic chemistry was offered.

The problem with organic chemistry is ther is my biggest weakness of the field. I don’t want to take it. But at the other side of my heart it wants me to take it. I recently passed organic chemistry 2 with C-. The first test wasn’t my best, but I gotten better as the course progressed. I also have to take an advance laboratory requirement course. Since I’m better at the lab portion of organic chemistry I’ll be taking Advanced Synthesis Laboratory.

My biggest worried will be what if my last option is to take advance organic chemistry if inorganic chemistry 2 isn’t offered.

Why not talk with profs in the department to see what will be taught? and then decide based on that.

I won't be taking any advance elective until I complete the physical chemistry sequence. That will be Spring 2020. I will be taking PCHEM in Fall 2019

Almost all electives require PCHEM
