SUMMARY

This discussion highlights a memorable experience shared by a former student regarding their high school science teacher, Joe Macki, who conducted an outdoor optics experiment using a parabolic mirror in 2014 or 2015. The student recalls the moment vividly, emphasizing Mr. Macki's willingness to engage in hands-on learning outside the standard curriculum. The conversation reflects on the lasting impact of dedicated educators and the importance of experiential learning in science education.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic optics principles
  • Familiarity with parabolic mirrors and their applications
  • Knowledge of hands-on science teaching methods
  • Appreciation for experiential learning in education
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physics of parabolic mirrors and their uses in various applications
  • Explore effective hands-on teaching strategies for science educators
  • Investigate the impact of experiential learning on student retention and engagement
  • Learn about the history and evolution of science education methodologies
USEFUL FOR

Teachers, educators, and anyone interested in the impact of hands-on learning experiences in science education will benefit from this discussion.

Hello folks. Roughly 10 years ago, during 9th grade, my science teacher Joe Macki let me go outside with him with a parabolic mirror and burn a hole through some paper during the optics lesson in 2014 or 2015, as I wanted to see if it was possible for a small parabolic mirror to do that. I remember this like yesterday. Mr. Macki was wearing a blue denim shirt, went outside with me carrying the parabolic mirror and placed a sheet of paper in front of the mirror near the grassy parking lot. We both knelt down and watched as the sun burned a hole into the paper in a matter of seconds.

What a cool guy, Mr. Macki is. Most science teachers would not take 5 minutes of their class time to perform an experiment outside of the curriculum.

Great story.

You get a good teacher and you never forget them.

Thank you. He was a good guy. Kinda wonder what he is doing now, 10 years later. But yes, if one gets a good teacher, one will never forget him or her.
