Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around evaluating a logarithmic expression involving multiple logarithmic terms, specifically 2log10 + log10(1/2 + 1/3) + 1/3log27. Participants are attempting to simplify and correctly compute the expression without the use of logarithm tables.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants share their attempts at simplifying the logarithmic expression and express uncertainty about the correctness of their calculations, particularly regarding the term log10(1/2 + 1/3). There is a discussion about the properties of logarithms, specifically the incorrect assumption that log(a + b) can be separated into log(a) + log(b). One participant questions the sum of the fractions (1/2) + (1/3).

Discussion Status

The discussion is active, with participants exploring different interpretations of the logarithmic properties. One participant acknowledges a correction regarding the sum of the fractions, indicating a productive direction in the conversation.

Contextual Notes

Participants are working under the constraint of not using logarithm tables, which may influence their approaches and reasoning. There is also an emphasis on verifying each step of their calculations.

Without using tables:

1. Evaluate 2log10 + log10(1/2 + 1/3) + 1/3log27

2log2 + log 1 - log2 + log1 - log3 + log3 = log2..

This was my attempt but it's wrong . I think I went wrong somewhere here log10(1/2 + 1/3) but I can't find the error.

log(a + b) ≠ log(a) + log(b)

What is (1/2) + (1/3) ?

oh so it should be log(5/6) ?

Oh yes I got it! I got 1. Thanks for pointing that out.
