SUMMARY

Researchers at the University of Calgary have confirmed that living organisms emit low levels of light within the 200-1000 nm wavelength range, suggesting that future tricorders, similar to those in Star Trek, may be capable of detecting lifeforms. The Wand Company has released a tricorder prop featuring 233 Captain's logs, solar system information, and various environmental measurement capabilities. However, the integration of life detection technology into these devices is not expected for at least two hundred years, and no medical functionalities are currently available.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetic spectrum, specifically the 200-1000 nm wavelength range.
  • Familiarity with the concept of bioluminescence and its implications in detecting life.
  • Knowledge of tricorder technology and its applications in science fiction and real-world technology.
  • Awareness of environmental sensing technologies and their functionalities.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of bioluminescence and its applications in biological detection.
  • Explore advancements in electromagnetic radiation sensing technologies.
  • Investigate the design and functionalities of modern environmental sensors.
  • Learn about the historical and cultural significance of tricorders in science fiction and their potential real-world applications.
USEFUL FOR

Scientists, science fiction enthusiasts, technology developers, and anyone interested in the intersection of biology and technology, particularly in the context of life detection and environmental sensing.

A recent article in Phys.org claims that researchers at the University of Calgary have discovered that life emits low levels of light in the 200-1000 nm wavelength:

That means that someday a tricorder from Star Trek will be able to detect lifeforms.

As an aside, there is a company called The Wand company that has released its first batch of tricorder props with impressive features:

- all 233 Captain's logs are recorded for playback in the device
- information about the solar system
- screens to imitate various Star Trek screens from TOS
- ability to measure various environmental parameters
Sensing: Functioning orientation compass, Atmospheric measurement of ambient temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure, electromagnetic radiation proximity sensing, audio level sensing and display, device core temperature measurement, hood open and closed sensing, upper door open and closed sensing, individual disc present sensing, primary disc function sensor.

There is no word on when they will incorporate the life-forms detection feature, possibly in two hundred years or so. Unfortunately, no medical features are currently available either.
