SUMMARY

Francesc is seeking guidance on pursuing a PhD in theoretical statistical mechanics in Europe. The University of Edinburgh is highlighted as a strong option for applied statistical mechanics and simulations of complex systems. Additionally, Cambridge is noted for its focus on more theoretical aspects of statistical mechanics. The discussion also invites insights into institutions in continental Europe that specialize in this field.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of theoretical statistical mechanics concepts
  • Familiarity with applied physics and complex systems
  • Knowledge of academic programs in physics and mathematics
  • Awareness of European universities with strong research departments
NEXT STEPS
  • Research PhD programs in theoretical statistical mechanics at the University of Edinburgh
  • Explore the physics department offerings at the University of Cambridge
  • Investigate other European institutions with strong statistical mechanics research
  • Connect with current PhD students or faculty in statistical mechanics for insights
USEFUL FOR

Prospective PhD students in theoretical physics, researchers in statistical mechanics, and anyone interested in academic opportunities in European institutions focusing on physics and mathematics.

Hi all,

I am thinking of doing a PhD in theoretical statistical mechanics and would like to do it in Europe. I am having trouble finding institutes with a focus on SM or Physics/Mathematics departments strong in the field. Some guidance would be really appreciated.

Thanks, and best regards.

Francesc.

Personally, I'd love info on stat mech programs in the UK. There's a chance that we're moving there next year.

Hi Geezer,

As far as I can tell, there's a strong cluster at the University of Edimburgh, in the physics department doing fairly applied stuff and simulations of complex systems. I think there's quite a bit going on the more 'pure' side in Cambridge. Hope this helps. Otherwise, anybody knows about the Stat Mech scene in continental europe? Cheers?
