SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the challenges faced by a prospective PhD student in astrophysics who struggles with mathematics while preparing for GATE and JEST physics exams. The participant, with a background in automotive design engineering, emphasizes the necessity of strengthening their math skills to succeed in physics. A recommended resource is "Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences" by Mary Boas, which has proven effective for others in similar situations. The participant expresses a desire for guidance on improving their mathematical confidence and skills.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of GATE and JEST physics exam formats
  • Familiarity with basic mathematical concepts relevant to physics
  • Knowledge of study techniques for complex subjects
  • Access to "Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences" by Mary Boas
NEXT STEPS
  • Study "Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences" by Mary Boas
  • Practice solving physics problems that require advanced mathematical techniques
  • Explore online courses focused on mathematics for physics
  • Join study groups or forums dedicated to physics and mathematics preparation

I always have this near me. I've actually used it as my primary study guide for courses that used other textbooks...
For some reason, Boas just seems to click with how I think. I don't know if I'm alone in this though.
