Take Quantum Mechanics: Can GPA Exception be Applied?

My university offers an honors sequence of quantum mechanics and I want to take it except I am not an honors student. They do have an exception where if you have a certain gpa you can take the class but my gpa is not close to the gpa needed to take the class due to my freshman year screw ups. However, I have done sufficiently better in my physics and math classes now so would it be appropriate to ask my advisor if I could take this course, because I am worried that he will say no.
