The Clueless Newbie

AI Thread Summary
New users seeking guidance on forum participation are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations, which can be found on the Physics Forums website. The forum supports discussions on cutting-edge theories published in peer-reviewed journals, specifically in the Beyond the Standard Model section. However, personal theories or unverified ideas are not permitted. Philosophical discussions are generally restricted, with exceptions for quantum interpretations allowed in designated forums. Moderation is emphasized to maintain high-quality discourse, and users are advised to frame their inquiries in a way that invites constructive feedback rather than definitive statements. This approach enhances the quality of discussions while adhering to the forum's standards.

Hello to everyone if anyone reads this!
I am new to both this website and the processes of communicating within online forums, or just human interaction in general.
If I may please ask a few silly questions to ensure I am adheering to the current requirements and expectations?

Primarily, Where may I find a list of rules and regulations for optimal and correct use of the forum?

And secondly, Would members encourage this space as a safe area for discussions around possible new theories and philosophical debates?

If, by "new theories", you mean cutting-edge work published in peer reviewed journals that hasn't yet reached mainstream acceptance, then the Beyond the Standard Model forum is the place for discussion of that topic. If you mean something you're developing yourself, that's not allowed for discussion here. Philosophy is also forbidden, except that discussions of quantum interpretations is normal discourse in that field and is allowed in the Quantum Interpretations forum. The decision on both was made before I joined the forum, I believe because it proved impossible to moderate the discussions to our usual standards.

I am grateful for your timely response and thank you for your explanation.

I would add that this place does have a pretty strong moderation. Although it can at times be frustrating in the limitations it imposes on what gets discussed, it does take all the discussions within the scope of the site (physics broadly taken) to a higher level than what would otherwise be expected. Its a quality difference.

You can also stay withing the rules and still put ideas out there to get responses just by how you phrase things. Maybe instead of "this is how things work" to "why would this not work for this problem?".
Its not the place to publish new stuff ("this is how things work"), but you can get your ideas ("why would this not work for this problem?") interpreted if you approach it right.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
