Is Friedman challenging traditional views in his latest piece?

About a week or so ago, a good Op-ed piece by Tom Friedman was linked to on this forum. I think this is another good piece. I think Friedman is one of the most objective voices in the media. Of course, it could be that I think this because I agree with him a lot!

Isn't Friedman a conservative?

I believe Friedman is considered to be a moderate, slightly left of center. It is hard to pin him down on the left-right spectrum though. He is more of a rational iconoclast, challenging traditional views without inflammatory rhetoric.
