SUMMARY

The race between a tortoise and a hare, where the tortoise runs at 10 cm/sec and the hare at 100 cm/sec, concludes with the tortoise winning by 20 cm despite the hare resting for 2 minutes. To determine the length of the race, one must set up equations for the distances covered by both animals, factoring in the hare's resting time. The solution involves equating the distance traveled by the tortoise and the hare, accounting for the hare's 120-second rest period.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic kinematics and distance-time relationships
  • Ability to formulate and solve algebraic equations
  • Familiarity with velocity calculations
  • Knowledge of unit conversions (e.g., seconds to minutes)
NEXT STEPS
  • Learn how to set up distance equations in kinematics
  • Study the concept of relative velocity in racing scenarios
  • Explore algebraic methods for solving equations with multiple variables
  • Investigate real-world applications of motion equations in competitive sports
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching kinematics, and anyone interested in solving mathematical problems related to motion and racing dynamics.

Can someone help me with this question? I am not sure where to go with it.

A speedy tortoise can run with a velocity of 10 cm/sec and a hare can run 10 times as fast. In a race, they both start at the same time, but the hare stops to rest for 2.0 minutes. The tortoise wins by a shell (20 cm). What was the length of the race?

thanks

Welcome to PF.

Maybe write an equation that describes the distance the Hare goes (including the 120 sec pit stop) as a function of time and add the 20 cm he loses by and the distance the Tortoise goes with time and then set the two equations equal?
