SUMMARY

Tracing a computer's previous logged-on locations is theoretically possible, contingent on the operating system and the logging settings in place. Data recovery is feasible unless the hard drive has been securely wiped using specialized software. Formatting a drive does not erase browsing history or personal files, allowing for potential recovery of this information. However, practical efforts to trace ownership are unlikely due to a general lack of interest in pursuing such investigations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of operating system logging mechanisms
  • Knowledge of data recovery techniques
  • Familiarity with secure deletion tools
  • Basic concepts of file system management
NEXT STEPS
  • Research data recovery software options like Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard
  • Learn about secure deletion methods, including tools like DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke)
  • Explore operating system-specific logging features in Windows and macOS
  • Investigate file system structures and how they impact data recovery
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for forensic analysts, IT professionals, and anyone interested in data recovery and digital forensics.

If i found a computer on the street and it had no information on the owner or previous user, is it possible to to then find and locate where it had been used and thus a possible owner?

Perhaps but it depends on the OS and what kind of logging they had active.

If we're talking theoretical possibility - unless data is scrubbed from a hard drive, traces can usually be recovered. If you simply format over a drive that has a browsing history on it or personal files, that data can be recovered. Secure delete programs exist to help with this. In reality no one will probably care nearly enough to try to do anything like this.
