Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around transitioning from a PhD in computational materials science to educational research. Participants explore strategies for making this shift, including literature searches, identifying research problems, and leveraging teaching experience.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests starting with a literature search to identify a research problem before approaching potential collaborators.
  • Another participant mentions that it is feasible to conduct educational research while completing a PhD and working as a professor, citing Scott Freeman as an example of someone who has successfully integrated educational research into their career.
  • A brief mention of "Tensor with the field of education" is made, though its context is unclear.
  • A link to a faculty page is provided, possibly as a resource for further exploration.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to agree on the potential for conducting educational research alongside academic responsibilities, but there is no consensus on specific strategies or approaches.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the nature of educational research and the integration of teaching experience into research roles remain unexamined. The mention of "Tensor" lacks context, which may limit understanding.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in transitioning to educational research, particularly those with backgrounds in STEM fields and teaching experience.

I'm about to complete a PhD in computational materials science.

However, moving on, educational research seems interesting to me. What are some ways in which I can make the move? Start doing a literature search on my own, then when I've identified a problem, then knock on someone's doors and prove to him that I know enough to carry on?

Right now I am earning my keep by doing teaching in a polytechnic, and improving the way teaching is done and understanding how people learn has piqued my interest.

You can most likely complete your PhD and do this research while being a professor in a college. Scott Freeman, a biologist originally if I recall correctly, is very into educational research for example.
