SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on transitioning from a PhD in computational materials science to educational research. Key strategies include conducting independent literature searches to identify research problems and networking with established researchers to demonstrate expertise. The participant currently teaches at a polytechnic, which has sparked an interest in improving educational practices. Notable figures in this field, such as Scott Freeman, exemplify successful transitions into educational research.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of educational research methodologies
  • Familiarity with literature review techniques
  • Knowledge of pedagogical theories and practices
  • Experience in teaching or educational settings
NEXT STEPS
  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review on educational research methodologies
  • Explore networking strategies to connect with educational researchers
  • Investigate the role of cognitive science in educational practices
  • Learn about the impact of teaching techniques on student learning outcomes
USEFUL FOR

Individuals transitioning from STEM fields to educational research, educators seeking to enhance teaching methods, and researchers interested in the intersection of science and education.

I'm about to complete a PhD in computational materials science.

However, moving on, educational research seems interesting to me. What are some ways in which I can make the move? Start doing a literature search on my own, then when I've identified a problem, then knock on someone's doors and prove to him that I know enough to carry on?

Right now I am earning my keep by doing teaching in a polytechnic, and improving the way teaching is done and understanding how people learn has piqued my interest.

You can most likely complete your PhD and do this research while being a professor in a college. Scott Freeman, a biologist originally if I recall correctly, is very into educational research for example.

Tensor with the field of education.
