SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the solution to question 8(c) from the Edexcel 6665-01 January 2011 exam. Participants assert that the mark scheme fails to include the necessary plus-minus sign (±) in the solution, specifically regarding the expression involving sqrt(x²-1). The debate highlights the importance of recognizing the principal value branch in inverse functions, which typically assumes a positive slope. This indicates a potential oversight in the mark scheme that could affect grading consistency.

I would have put a ##\pm## sign on it. But one might also make the argument that the inverse function is understood to mean the principal value branch. In that case the principal value branch is usually chosen to have positive slope. Your mileage may vary.
