SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the Q values associated with the fission of Uranium-236 (U-236). It is established that the Q value for symmetric fission into two Rubidium-118 (118Ru) nuclei is 185 MeV, which is lower than the Q value of 188 MeV for the asymmetric fission into Strontium-96 (96Sr) and Xenon-140 (140Xe). The difference in Q values is attributed to the varying amounts of mass converted to energy during these fission processes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of nuclear fission processes
  • Knowledge of Q value calculations in nuclear physics
  • Familiarity with isotopes, specifically Uranium-236 and its fission products
  • Basic principles of mass-energy equivalence (E=mc²)
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the Q value calculations for different fission reactions
  • Explore the fission products of Uranium-236 in detail
  • Study the principles of symmetric vs. asymmetric fission
  • Learn about the implications of mass-energy conversion in nuclear reactions
USEFUL FOR

Nuclear physicists, students studying nuclear chemistry, and researchers interested in fission processes and energy calculations.

I have question regarding the fission of 236U,my question is why we have the Q value (185MeV) of the symmetric fission of U236 (two 118Ru) is less than the Q value (188MeV) for the fission into 96Sr and 140Xe
