Participants emphasize that it is common to have diverse interests and that clarity often comes with time and experience. Suggestions include taking a gap year for travel or work experience to gain perspective before making a decision. The conversation highlights the importance of exploration and personal growth in determining one's academic path.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of graduate school application processes
  • Familiarity with various subfields in Math and Physics
  • Awareness of the importance of research interests
  • Knowledge of gap year opportunities and their benefits
NEXT STEPS
  • Research graduate programs in Math and Physics
  • Explore gap year options for travel or work experience
  • Investigate different research opportunities in chosen subfields
  • Connect with current graduate students for insights on their decision-making process

So, I have interests in quite a few small subfields of both Math and Physics. I have no clue what I am going to want to study during graduate school, granted I have time to think about still (2nd year of undergrad). I have no real top list of schools, no real idea what research I would like to choose, or even if Math or Physics is my top choice.

My question is basically, when did you know that this was the subject you wanted to study? That (insert branch of subject here) was what you wanted to do research in?

This is not me being worried because I am unsure, this is more curiosity about when that inspiration (for a lack of a better term) is to come.

Hey Douggy Douggy Doug - super tough decision, but don't start stressing about it now - you definitely have time! I mean even if you still don't know for sure when you graduate, take a year or two off from school and go travelling! Or just get some work experience.
