Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenges of choosing a specific field of study within Math and Physics for graduate school. Participants share their experiences and thoughts on how to navigate uncertainties regarding research interests and school selection.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about their future research focus in Math and Physics, questioning when others realized their specific interests.
  • Another participant suggests that it is normal to feel uncertain at this stage and encourages taking time to explore options, including traveling or gaining work experience before committing to a graduate program.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that uncertainty is a common experience for those considering graduate studies, but there is no consensus on when or how one should find their specific research interest.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects a range of personal experiences and does not resolve the question of how to effectively choose a field of study or graduate school.

Who May Find This Useful

Undergraduate students contemplating graduate studies in Math or Physics, individuals exploring their academic interests, and those seeking advice on navigating uncertainties in their educational paths.

So, I have interests in quite a few small subfields of both Math and Physics. I have no clue what I am going to want to study during graduate school, granted I have time to think about still (2nd year of undergrad). I have no real top list of schools, no real idea what research I would like to choose, or even if Math or Physics is my top choice.

My question is basically, when did you know that this was the subject you wanted to study? That (insert branch of subject here) was what you wanted to do research in?

This is not me being worried because I am unsure, this is more curiosity about when that inspiration (for a lack of a better term) is to come.

Hey Douggy Douggy Doug - super tough decision, but don't start stressing about it now - you definitely have time! I mean even if you still don't know for sure when you graduate, take a year or two off from school and go travelling! Or just get some work experience.
