SUMMARY

The discussion clarifies the relationship between electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and polarization. EMR consists of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that are always perpendicular to each other. Polarization refers to the orientation of the electric field component of EMR, which can be either horizontal or vertical. Therefore, the direction of polarization is defined by the electric field's orientation, despite the inherent perpendicular nature of EMR's components.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetic radiation (EMR)
  • Basic knowledge of electric and magnetic fields
  • Familiarity with the concept of polarization
  • Knowledge of wave properties in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of electromagnetic wave propagation
  • Study the mathematical representation of polarization in EMR
  • Explore applications of polarization in optics and telecommunications
  • Learn about the effects of polarization on signal transmission
USEFUL FOR

Students and professionals in physics, optical engineers, and anyone interested in the principles of electromagnetic waves and their applications in technology.

Hi,
I'm sorry this is a silly question. My basic understanding of EMR is that it is an oscillating electric field perpendicular to an oscillating magnetic field, and my basic understand of polarization is that it let's either horizontally or vertically oriented EMR through. How can that be if EMR is composed of two perpendicular fields? Thanks!

That's what an electromagnetic wave is always like - an oscillating electric field perpendicular to an oscillating magnetic field. By convention, the direction of polarization is taken to be the direction of the electric field.
