Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the phenomenon of unfortunate or misleading website addresses, particularly those that may have innocent intentions but can be misinterpreted. Participants share examples and anecdotes related to this topic, exploring both humorous and problematic implications.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants highlight the website "FoothillsPedo.com," noting its misleading appearance despite being intended for a pediatric dentistry practice.
  • Others compare it to "Pen Island," discussing its closure and the implications of its name, suggesting that the name may have been purposefully selected for humor or double entendre.
  • A participant mentions "La Drape," a website for bedspreads, as an example of a name that is not misleading.
  • There are questions raised about why "FoothillsPedi" was not chosen as a name, with some humorously suggesting it could lead to confusion with pedicures.
  • Participants share anecdotes about other unfortunate names, including a humorous story involving a Dr. Penisi and a mistaken phone call.
  • Some express that the topic should focus on names that appear innocent but are misleading, rather than those that are intentionally humorous.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the humorous nature of the topic but differ on whether certain names were intentionally chosen for comedic effect or if they are merely unfortunate coincidences. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the intent behind specific names.

Contextual Notes

Some participants reference external links and examples, which may not be universally recognized or verified, leaving room for differing interpretations of the names discussed.

I did a double take this morning when I saw a TV commercial with a picture showing a thirty-something guy sitting on a couch surrounded by a bunch of smiling kids. Underneath it was the address "FoothillsPedo.com" in large letters, and then in slightly smaller letters, "Foothills Pediatric Dentistry."

Oh my, that's almost worse than http://www.penisland.net/ (Pen Island - We specialize in wood)

I'm afraid Pen Island is closed. More money to be had in selling the web name than in selling writing implements, I guess.

ExpertsExchange kept it open for a while, but seems to have also closed.

La Drape, a purveyor of fine bedspreads, is still open: http://www.ladrape.com/

Ooops, that was the wrong URL. Pen Island is open (corrected link)

Reminder, the topic is about innocent names that look wrong, not ones that were intentionally selected.

And according to their website, they are
Handling The Big Jobs, Too

Why isn't it FoothillsPedi?

We wouldn't want someone thinking they could get pedicures there, now would we?

I'm pretty sure Pen Island was purposefully selected. How else would you explain double entendres like:

Whether you're looking for a long and thin white leather pen or a thick dark mahogany pen we have just the one for you.

I remember the original site had something along the lines of "thick black pens squirting lots of ink".

Either the most amazing (and unfortunate) coincidence - or a joke.

Either way, do check out the Uncyclopedia link on Pen Island: http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Pen_Island

One of those times Uncyclopedia rises head and shoulders (and other parts) above its staid cousin Wiki.

At least they don't say that they'll put lead in your pencil. (or do they?)

I once called directory information to get the number of a Dr. Penisi. She thought it was an obscene phone call and hung up on me.
