Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around finding an up-to-date cosmology textbook that is more substantial than Linder's work but less comprehensive than Weinberg's. Participants express their familiarity with general relativity (GR) and their preferences for a book that does not require extensive technical knowledge.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks recommendations for a cosmology textbook that balances depth and accessibility, indicating they have read Linder but find it insufficient.
  • Another participant reiterates the request for suggestions without additional commentary.
  • A third participant lists three potential textbooks: "Cosmology" by Coles and Lucchin, "Physical Foundations of Cosmology" by Mukhanov, and "Modern Cosmology" by Dodelson, providing links for each.
  • A subsequent post corrects a link provided earlier, ensuring accurate access to one of the suggested texts.
  • A participant expresses gratitude towards others for their contributions to the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for a cosmology textbook that fits a specific niche between Linder and Weinberg, but there is no consensus on which book is the best choice, as multiple suggestions are offered without further evaluation.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the specific criteria for what constitutes "up to date" or "substantial," leaving room for interpretation based on individual preferences and backgrounds.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers interested in cosmology, particularly those looking for accessible yet substantial textbooks that do not delve into overly technical material.

Is there any cosmology book out there that is up to date, more substantial than Linder, but less so than Weinberg? I own Linder and have read it, and it's fine, but it only goes so far. I have a pretty firm grasp of GR, but if I bought Weinberg I think the chances I'd wade through it are slim. I'm not embarking on a career as a theorist in this area, and I have no interest in learning technical tricks.

I'll offer three possibilities without any comments:

1) Cosmology by Coles and Lucchin

2) Physical Foundations of Cosmology by Mukhanov

3) Modern Cosmology by Dodelson
