Validity of Acoustic Weapon Effects

In summary, there is conflicting information about the biological effects of acoustic weapons, with some sources claiming they can cause harm to organisms and others denying it. These claims come from a variety of scientific sources and military leaders. There are also conspiracy theorists who believe in the capabilities of these weapons, but they should not be trusted. There are two articles linked, one claiming the weapons work and the other denying it, with a focus on infrasound. The use of acoustic weapons has been reported in the US for riot control purposes, but the ACLU has prepared a response. The Federal government claims that these weapons have been used against diplomats in Cuba, but this assertion has been questioned.

Note: this is a re-post from the physics area because this thread is probably more appropriate for this content.

There is a lot of rather contradictory information present on the biological effects of acoustic weapons with a bevy of scientific articles claiming that they cause harm to biological organisms with effects such as nausia, gagging, and disorientation. These articles are mostly from older scientific articles and modern government scientific reports on the issue, and statements by military leaders overseeing the development of the weapons (including defence contractors). Contradictory claims are also being made by a multitude of scientific sources from a variety of different countries and backgrounds.

I am not sure which one is correct after reading about a dozen articles from both sides. Does anyone have any insight on this issue?

Of note, there are a multitude of crackpots and conspiracy theorists that believe that the acoustic weapons are real and can do outworldly things- the media seems to have bought into these speculations thouroughly and should probably not be trusted.

Here are two articles (one claiming they work and the other denying it especially pertaining to infrasound):

All I know is that use of such weapons has been reported in the US as riot-control in e.g., Ferguson MO,

and that the ACLU has prepared a response:

https://www.aclu.org/sites/default/files/field_document/acoustic_weapons.pdf

These seem to be hearing-range acoustic devices. (there are yootooobe videos showing such devices and their use)
Infrasound? I know they DO cause an emotional response (you've probably experienced it in action and horror movies in a high-end theater), but damage, etc... don't know for sure...

at least the Federal Gov't (yeah- that highly reliable source of alternative facts...) asserts that these have been used against US and Canadian diplomats in Cuba. That assertion has been questioned.

Cheers!

1. What is an acoustic weapon?

An acoustic weapon is a device that uses sound waves to harm, incapacitate, or deter individuals or crowds. These weapons can produce high frequency or high amplitude sound waves that can cause pain, disorientation, or even permanent hearing loss.

2. How do acoustic weapons work?

Acoustic weapons work by emitting sound waves at high frequencies or amplitudes. When these sound waves reach a target, they can cause physical effects such as pain, dizziness, or disorientation. They can also disrupt communication and balance, making it difficult for individuals to function normally.

3. Are acoustic weapons effective?

The effectiveness of acoustic weapons depends on various factors such as the distance between the weapon and the target, the type of sound waves used, and the resilience of the target. However, they have been shown to have a significant impact on individuals and crowds, making them a viable option for crowd control and deterrence.

4. Are there any long-term effects of acoustic weapons?

There is limited research on the long-term effects of acoustic weapons. However, studies have shown that exposure to high amplitude sound waves can cause permanent hearing loss and other health issues. Therefore, it is important to use these weapons with caution and only in situations where absolutely necessary.

5. Can acoustic weapons be used ethically?

The use of acoustic weapons, like any other weapon, can be ethical or unethical depending on the circumstances. It is important for their use to be regulated and controlled to prevent unnecessary harm or abuse. Additionally, proper training and guidelines should be in place for those who handle and use these weapons to ensure their ethical use.
