Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for books on particle physics, with participants sharing various titles suitable for different levels of understanding in the subject.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a specific interest in particle physics and requests book recommendations.
  • Another participant inquires about the level of physics and math the original poster has studied.
  • The original poster indicates they have studied high school mathematics and physics and are continuing their education.
  • Recommendations include Martinus Veltman's "Facts and Mysteries in Elementary Particle Physics" and Sean Carroll's recent book on the Higgs, which has not yet been read by the recommender.
  • Another suggestion is David Griffiths' "Revolutions in Twentieth-Century Physics," noted for its suitability for undergraduate students and its use of problems and worked examples.
  • Bruce Schumm's book is recommended for its conceptual and intuitive approach to particle physics, including discussions on mathematical ideas like Lie groups and gauge theory.
  • A participant expresses intent to explore the recommended books.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of the recommended books, but there is no consensus on a single best choice or approach, as multiple titles are suggested for different levels and interests.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations depend on the reader's background in physics and mathematics, and the suitability of each book may vary based on individual learning preferences.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers interested in particle physics, particularly those at the high school level or early undergraduate students seeking foundational texts.

I am mostly interested in particle physics so if anyone can suggest some good books for it

What level of physics and math have you studied?

High school mathematics and physics and studying further

I'd recommend:

Martinus Veltman, Facts and Mysteries in Elementary Particle Physics.

Also, Sean Carroll's book on the Higgs just came out (haven't read it yet).

Thank you

David Griffiths has a new book, "Revolutions in Twentieth-Century Physics", that contains some particle physics, and that I have pre-ordered. From Amazon's website: "Suitable for undergraduate students in non-science as well as science subjects, it uses problems and worked examples to help readers develop an understanding of what recent advances in physics actually mean."

This looks like it is an excellent book that is up to Griffiths' usual high standards,

Bruce Schumm's https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003X4KCFS/?tag=pfamazon01-20 is a conceptual / intuitive presentation of particle physics and many of the mathematical ideas such as Lie groups and gauge theory.

Ok i will try to have my hands on the books you have mentioned
