What are the Best Methods for Precise Vertical Movement Measurement?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on methods for accurately measuring vertical movement using a linear displacement sensor, specifically a Hall effect sensor with a resolution of 10μm. Participants recommend against using a drill press due to its lack of precision and suggest alternatives such as digital scales and read heads from manufacturers like Renishaw, Heidenhain, and Mitutoyo, which can achieve resolutions of up to 1/10 micron. Additionally, the importance of using gage blocks for reliable measurements and conducting a repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) study to assess system uncertainty is emphasized.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of linear displacement sensors, particularly Hall effect sensors.
  • Familiarity with measurement tools such as micrometers and caliper gauges.
  • Knowledge of digital scales and read heads from manufacturers like Renishaw and Mitutoyo.
  • Basic principles of repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) studies in measurement systems.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specifications and capabilities of Renishaw and Heidenhain digital scales.
  • Learn about the use of gage blocks for precise measurement verification.
  • Study the methodology for conducting a repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) study.
  • Explore alternative programmable tools for precise vertical movement measurement.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for engineers, metrologists, and anyone involved in precision measurement and calibration of sensors, particularly those working with linear displacement sensors and seeking to improve measurement accuracy.

I want to test the accuracy a linear displacement sensor (Hall effect) that I have, but I'm not sure what to measure it against. The sensors are made to measure with a resolution of 10μm. My initial thought was to use a drill press to move up and down, but I don't think I know of any that are programmable/ can move precisely. I also thought of machining but I don't have machining tools on hand. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks

Borrow a micrometer and put the sensor on the fixed anvil .

Ditto caliper gauge .

drill press is not accurate enough. there are many digital scales and read heads available pretty cheap.
renishaw is one company, heidenhein is another. Mitutoyo has many as well.many resolve to 1/10 micron resolution. you still need true measurement of displacement and the gage block is reliable and trusted. once you read up on repeatabilty and can do a true R&R study you can know uncertainty of your " system" and its capability.
