SUMMARY

Mercury poses significant health hazards by binding with essential metals like selenium, which are crucial for protein synthesis in the brain. It interacts with sulfur-containing enzymes, affecting nearly all enzymatic processes in the body. The element's toxicological effects are not fully understood, but its affinity for sulfur compounds indicates a broad impact on metabolic functions. Understanding these interactions is vital for addressing mercury exposure and its health implications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic knowledge of toxicology and heavy metals
  • Understanding of protein synthesis and enzyme function
  • Familiarity with the role of selenium in human health
  • Awareness of environmental health hazards
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the biochemical interactions between mercury and selenium
  • Study the effects of mercury on sulfur-containing enzymes
  • Explore detoxification methods for heavy metal exposure
  • Investigate the health effects of mercury in various populations
USEFUL FOR

Health professionals, toxicologists, environmental scientists, and anyone concerned with the effects of heavy metals on human health.

How does the element Mercury actually effect your body for it to be a health hazard?

I don't think it's totally understood.
It seems to bind with certain other metals (eg selenium) that are essential to making certain proteins in your brain. Mercury has been used to 'cure' people who have received large doses of otherwise vital elements.
