Interesting indeed. But in the absence of time, how does one distinguish between cause and effect, if they are relevant concepts at all? With time, cause is the event which precedes the other. If two things happen at once, but only together, then, in my view, neither is the cause nor the effect, for in a situation in which these two can be interchanged, they don't exist at all.

Exactly. And if that were to occur, causality would be violated. Something happened with nothing causing it.

No, but you got it backward, or I'm trying to take it backward ! Once you have a sense of causality, maybe up to an overall convention reversing cause and effect, then you get time.

One way to go would be to suppose light ray structures, or light cones, as more fundamental (Penrose-like GR way)

Another way to go (and I'm fighting with that) is to read Haag's book and/or directly Rovelli & Connes thermal time hypothesis (heard of KMS/Tomita-Takesaki ? QM way)

But anyway, I'm not sure where that's leading me... way above my head I guess

I'm wondering how I can prove God scientifically to an atheist who simply won't accept anything but rigorous experimental data. My only problem is that our understanding of the universe is so incomplete. I assert that when a TOE is found(fingers crossed for M-theory even though it still hasn't put foward anything directly experimentally verifiable. Indirect for sure, but that's never good enough. I digress as usual) we will be able to have enough insight to make claims about the real questions of existence. What do I do?
For the record, I'm a deist, not a follower of any of the establishments.

IMHO you need to back up a little bit and think a about this purpose, by itself. Science never answers "why?" but only "how?".

For instance, can I convince you that french cheese tastes good if you don't like it ? Maybe it's a weak analogy, but do you think you can logically prove someone that they must love you ?

Religion is a moral choice, science is also a moral choice, and I don't even think they are contradictory.
