SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the chemical responsible for the color change in wood when exposed to sunlight. Participants suggest that a chemical stain, initially lemon yellow, transitions to a brown or tan hue due to UV exposure. The primary candidate mentioned is ferric chloride, potentially in combination with other substances. This highlights the interaction between UV light and certain chemicals in wood treatments.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of chemical staining processes in woodworking
  • Knowledge of UV light effects on materials
  • Familiarity with ferric chloride and its applications
  • Basic principles of color theory in materials
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the chemical properties of ferric chloride in wood treatments
  • Explore the effects of UV exposure on various wood stains
  • Investigate alternative chemical stains and their color change mechanisms
  • Learn about protective coatings that mitigate UV damage to wood
USEFUL FOR

Woodworkers, chemical engineers, and anyone interested in the effects of UV light on wood treatments will benefit from this discussion.

Just wondering if anyone might have a guess as to what chemical this could be based on it's apperance when it is applied to wood. I found this picture on a woodworking site. This is some kind of chemical stain for wood. When first applied to wood it is a lemon yellow color but after a few minutes of UV exposure in sunlight it turns a brown / tan color.

no opinions eh? I'm thinking possibly ferric chloride or that in a mix of other things
