The term max{deg(f), deg(g)} refers to the maximum value between the degrees of the polynomials f and g. In polynomial degree calculations, this notation is used to express that the degree of the sum of two polynomials is at most the higher degree of the two. This means that when adding two polynomials, the resulting degree will not exceed the greater of the two individual degrees. Understanding this notation is crucial for proving properties related to polynomial degrees. The discussion clarifies the use of max notation in the context of polynomial degree calculations.

Hello all,

I have a very quick quesion:
(This is not a HW question, its simply a notation question)

I need to show for f,g \in K[x] (where K is a field and K[x] is the set of polynomials) that
deg(fg)=deg(f)+deg(g) and deg(f+g) \leq max\left \{ deg(f),deg(g) \right \}

My question is: what does max\left \{ deg(f),deg(g) \right \} mean? I know what deg(f) means, I am wondering about the bracket notation i.e what does max\left \{ a,b \right \} mean?

Thanks!

It means to select the item within the braces which has the maximum value.

Here is a little puzzle from the book 100 Geometric Games by Pierre Berloquin. The side of a small square is one meter long and the side of a larger square one and a half meters long. One vertex of the large square is at the center of the small square. The side of the large square cuts two sides of the small square into one- third parts and two-thirds parts. What is the area where the squares overlap?
