SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the optimal double major combination for pursuing a career in quantum mechanics and string theory. Seth Mize suggests that a double major in Physics and Mathematics is the most sensible choice for this field. He cautions that many undergraduate students romanticize string theory, which may not align with the practical realities of the discipline. Ultimately, he advises students to consider double majoring in fields they are most passionate about, regardless of perceived career benefits.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of quantum mechanics principles
  • Familiarity with string theory concepts
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics
  • Basic grasp of theoretical physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the curriculum for a double major in Physics and Mathematics
  • Explore advanced topics in quantum mechanics
  • Investigate the realities of string theory in academic and research settings
  • Consider the implications of pursuing a double major in terms of workload and career goals
USEFUL FOR

Students considering a double major in Physics and Mathematics, aspiring theoretical physicists, and anyone interested in the practical applications of quantum mechanics and string theory.

I am currently thinking about getting a double major with a combination of any of the following degrees:
Physics
Mathematics
Chemistry
German

And possibly (With less consideration):
Biochemistry
Molecular Chemistry
Software Engineering

Most recently I have thought about doubling in Physics and Chemistry. I'm wanting to work with quantum mechanics/string theory as well as, well, anything theoretical and challenging. Any advice on which combination I should initially get? Thank-you.

For string theory, math and physics is most sensible, but a lot of UGs have this romantic notion of what string theory is actually about that does not measure up to the reality. You may want to just double major, if double majoring is even worth it, in whatever fields you enjoy the most.
