SUMMARY

An ornithopter, a type of aircraft that flies by flapping its wings, is being developed by Dr. James DeLaurier at the University of Toronto. This project aims to achieve successful flight, a goal that has eluded inventors since Leonardo da Vinci. The discussion highlights the challenges and humorous aspects of the development process, including a recent incident involving a pilot and his ornithopter. The conversation emphasizes the innovative nature of this technology and its potential to redefine flight mechanics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic aerodynamics
  • Familiarity with flight mechanics
  • Knowledge of historical aviation attempts
  • Awareness of modern engineering principles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of ornithopter design
  • Explore advancements in flapping wing technology
  • Study the historical context of early flight attempts
  • Investigate current projects in biomimetic flight
USEFUL FOR

Aerospace engineers, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the intersection of biology and flight technology will benefit from this discussion.

A University of Toronto professor hopes to succeed where Leonardo da Vinci failed -- by making an ornithoper fly.

But before we talk more about Dr. James DeLaurier's dream, you might want this question answered: What's an ornithopter? [continued]

Btw, please don't misunderstand, I applaud his efforts but you have to admit that it looks pretty funny; and dangerously close to that old B&W silent footage of early attempts at flight...the difference being that this has been modeled successfully.
