SUMMARY

The audible sound in the fountain video is primarily caused by the instability of the valve controlling the water flow. This phenomenon occurs when the design of the valve allows for a pressure drop that intermittently pulls the valve closed, followed by an increase in pressure that causes the valve to reopen. This cyclical process results in vibrations that produce sound. Similar effects are observed in hydraulic power steering systems, particularly at low vehicle speeds, leading to a condition known as "steering shudder."

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of fluid dynamics and pressure systems
  • Knowledge of valve mechanics and design
  • Familiarity with hydraulic systems
  • Basic principles of sound production in fluid flow
NEXT STEPS
  • Research valve design principles in hydraulic systems
  • Explore fluid dynamics related to pressure fluctuations
  • Investigate the phenomenon of "steering shudder" in hydraulic power steering
  • Learn about sound generation in fluid flow systems
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, hydraulic system designers, and anyone interested in the acoustics of fluid dynamics will benefit from this discussion.

Hello,

I'm curious to know what is creating the sound from this Youtube video assuming all of this is done only with water flowing through the fountain.

Thank you very much for your time.

Most likely it's an instability of the valve controlling the water flow. With the right (wrong?) design, flow through the valve can create a pressure drop that pulls the valve closed, at which point the pressure increases, and the valve opens again. And the process repeats, causing a vibration, which here produces audible sound.

Hydraulic power steering systems can experience this (again, depending on the design) when steering at very low vehicle speeds. It is a self-exciting "steering shudder."
