Homework Help Overview

The problem involves a mass-spring system where a 185g mass oscillates at a frequency of 5.2Hz. The initial position and velocity of the mass are provided, and the task is to determine the amplitude of the oscillation.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the use of differential equations to model simple harmonic motion (SHM) and express concerns about arriving at incorrect answers despite multiple attempts. Questions arise regarding the appropriate equations to use and the initial conditions provided.

Discussion Status

Some participants have offered to review the original poster's calculations and the official answer to identify potential errors. There is an ongoing exploration of different equations and methods to approach the problem.

Contextual Notes

Participants note that the original poster may be missing key elements in their calculations, and there is an emphasis on reviewing the initial conditions and equations used in the attempts.

hi hopperd! welcome to pf!

it's shm, so write a differential equation, and solve it with the given initial conditions …

what do you get?

Thanks,
Thats the problem. I have tried 3 diff equations, and get the same answer, but it's the wrong one. So I must be missing something. What equation would you use?

hi hopperd!

show us your full calculations, and the official answer, and then we'll see what went wrong, and we'll know how to help!
